Economic Review

11/1/2010

Given that the mid-term elections are only a day away…let’s shed some light on the subject.

Projections for Tuesday’s election are for a strong showing for the Republican Party, to the extent that they may win a majority in the House of Representatives and perhaps even the Senate.   This is really no story to anyone watching or listening to the media as the American populace is looking for change regarding government representation.  The noteworthy factors driving this attitude come from high unemployment, reduced standards of living, outsourcing of jobs, the continued poor state of the economy and a sense that nothing of real value is being done for the average citizen.  The issue to note for these elections however is that it should not be viewed as a Republican win however.

The true spirit underlying the projected change in leadership in various states across the nation is a vote against incumbents rather than for the Republican Party.  Let’s call it the vote for change rather than an embracing of a Republican empowerment.  In instances where particular Republican candidates have traces of anti-US-job creation policies, they are trailing even Democratic incumbents.  This is illustrated in California’s Senate race which depicts Carly Fiorina trailing Barbara Boxer.  Fiorina’s legacy from HP which involved significant job cuts plays right into a sensitive area for US voters in this election.

So despite the extent of Republican gains, be careful about how the media spins the Republican issue… Americans are looking for change.
